Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES)

NMES uses controlled electrical impulses delivered through electrodes to stimulate specific muscle groups, causing them to contract artificially. This therapy mimics the nervous system’s natural signals and is mainly used to help retrain muscles, prevent muscle loss (atrophy), and build strength. Most animals tolerate NMES well once they get used to the sensation.

How Does NMES Work?

NMES sends electrical pulses to nerves, imitating the body’s natural nerve signals that trigger muscle contractions. Unlike voluntary muscle contractions, where slow-twitch (type 1) fibres activate first for smooth movement, NMES preferentially recruits fast-twitch (type 2) fibres initially. These fibres contract more quickly and powerfully but fatigue faster, which can cause the jerky muscle movements often seen during NMES sessions.

Because fast-twitch fibres tire quickly, NMES treatments must include appropriate rest periods to allow recovery. Similar to TENS therapy, NMES also promotes increased blood flow, helping to deliver nutrients and remove waste products to aid healing.

What Is NMES Used For?

Muscle Rehabilitation: Strengthens weakened or inactive muscles after injury, surgery, or disuse, helping to restore muscle function and joint mobility.

Preventing Muscle Atrophy: Helps maintain muscle mass when animals cannot actively use certain muscles due to injury or extended rest.

Performance Training: Enhances muscle strength and endurance in sporting or working animals.

Neuromuscular Re-education: Supports retraining the connection between nerves and muscles to improve coordinated movement.
